A gastric banding, is this the solution?

By: Thomas H. Lindblom

The Gastric banding is an inflatable prosthetic medical device placed around the opening top section of the patients’ stomach. A tube is connected to this via a tiny keyhole surgical procedure. Once this is in situ around the stomach it creates a small pouch at the upper end of the stomach which is designed to hold approximately 50mls of content. This restricts further passage of food from the top to the bottom area of the patients’ stomach.

Once the gastric Banding is applied to the patients’ stomach, that part of the stomach sends a subconscious message to the brain telling that the stomach is full. This in turn helps the patient to eat less and providing the required weight loss over time.

But be careful, in some cases it could appear ulceration or gastritis erosion as the gastric banding can aggravate a small area on the outside of the stomach wall which can lead to a migration of the band itself into the inside the stomach. This however is very rare and usually there are many warning signs well in advance.

We may also consider the psychological effects of any weight loss procedure. Many patients who have suffered from obesity for large periods of time prior to the gastric banding surgery procedure, have been habitually overeating for long time, therefore any sudden changes to their diet and lifestyle can have some adverse affects on the Patient.

Adjustable gastric banding is a method of restrictive obesity surgery (bariatrics) designed for patients with morbid obesity, who generally have a body mass index of between 35 to 40.

If you suffer from morbid obesity and have tried everything consider carefully not simply the problems posed by being overweight in terms of the effect that that extra weight has on your lifestyle, but also in terms of the effect that your weight is having, and may have in the future, on your overall state of health.
