All Traffic is Not Created Equal – The Importance of Targeting

By: Jason Bland

Search engine optimization (SEO), one of the most common buzzwords thrown around the internet and advertising communities today, is also one of the most misunderstood terms in that demographic. Simply defined, SEO is the practice of attempting to organize websites and their content to ensure that they appear as highly as possible in the rankings of major search engines. The practice of SEO, and the emergence of an industry of SEO consultants, is logically posited on the fact that consumers are impatient, and are much more likely to follow a link that appears on the first page of search results.
Unfortunately, SEO consultants accurately reflect the real world, in that there are good guys, bad guys, and a whole host of guys in the middle. In a reference to the classic series “Spy vs. Spy,” the good guys engage in what’s referred to as “White Hat” SEO: taking the time to learn the guidelines and algorithms incorporated by search engines, and crafting a plan to maximize results in those engines with integrity. This takes into account website design (or redesign); generation of quality content applicable to the site; and generally ensuring that the site is designed primarily to interest users, not search engine algorithms.
In contrast, “Black Hat” SEO is less forthright, and often downright deceptive. Some search engine optimization consultants engage in practices that are patently dishonest. They may link completely unrelated sites, to trick consumers into visiting sites they’re not looking for. Or they may list scores of keywords, either invisibly on the site by making them the same color as the background, or by placing them in a section of the file that’s not visible onscreen. These practices are frowned upon by search engines, and can actually result in a website’s banishment from search results pages.
Effective SEO is concerned with more than the quantity of traffic to your website—it also cares about the quality of that traffic. A site that is repeatedly visited by people who are angry that they ended up there isn’t likely to generate much goodwill—or income, for that matter.
