Getting the Best Deal

Getting the Best Deal

Everyone is concerned with making the most of their money, they want the cheapest petrol, good value food that doesn't cost too much, and to find the cheapest fuel bills that they can. All of this requires a certain amount of research and effort but can result in significant savings. The same can be said of insurance issues, everyone needs to have driving insurance by legal requirement, most people have life or health insurance of some sort, and then there is buildings insurance and home insurance.

Insurance is an awkward one for people on the budget because it is designed to protect people against the unexpected and hence is sometimes ignored. This is, to a greater or less extent, tempting fate, so if you are operating on a budget and you want to be insured, you need to find the best deal possible.

In the past this has been a difficult proposition, but the advent of comparison websites has led to the entire British insurance market being available at just the click of a few buttons, but does that really result in the best possible deal? According to the FSA the answer is no, some of the information provided on these websites is either out-of-date or simply wrong. That is not to say, by any stretch, that every website offers inaccurate quotes, but it is best to be wary.

A further complexity has been added by some of the biggest and most well-known companies in the insurance industry offering deals that they claim cannot be found on any comparison site and can only be bought directly from the insurer. Further, comparison sites are not always able to deal with the specific details and requirements of every individual. For example, with the recent flood problems the insurance industry declared that it wouldn't insure all the houses in Britain that are currently in high-risk areas, from now on these cases are likely to be handled on an individual basis. Therefore, if you live in a flood risk area, it is probably best to contact a couple of insurance companies directly.

Price comparison sites effectively do the legwork that is always recommended when it comes to buying insurance, or a mortgage, getting a loan, or a new bank account. The theory being that if they compare all the offers for you, you will ultimately end up with the best deal, unfortunately, aside from all the problems listed above, even this basic premise might not be altogether true as these companies have to make a profit somewhere in the transaction and that profit is only going to come from you.

There is no problem with using a comparison website to give you an idea of the general cost of your insurance, but there is nothing better than doing the research yourself and contacting the insurance companies directly. If you are looking for a good deal on your home insurance, it might be worth taking a look at RIAS and the policies that they have on offer.
