Here's Why Long Distance Leaning Is Good For You

By: Ras Reed

Online distance learning does not totally nullify interaction with an instructor or with other students. The internet provides the instructor and the student with several tools that stimulate, almost perfectly, a face to face interaction. Webcasting is a relatively new mode of instructing online students that has broadened the interactive band of distance learning.

Most instructors use recorded audio and visual material because it gives them enough room to speak as extensively as they want to. You can get an elaborate lecture from your distance learning instructor, thanks to recorded visual and audio materials. Recorded media however come with the disadvantage of limiting interaction between the instructor and the teacher.

So you can’t be in two places at the same time – at work and in school – so what? You can take your accounting course online by distance education in any school of your choice. Most colleges offer distance learning partly because of the ease of conveyance of correspondence, and partly because it does help to generate revenue at little or no expense. Mostly though, it is so as to be able to help all those teeming multitudes who find it difficult to actually be in school, but need to get their diplomas.

Caleb Philips was the first to teach shorthand by correspondence in Boston in 1728, but it was Isaac Pittman who modernized distance education in Great Britain about a century later in the 1840s. The rest of the world had to wait until later that same 19th century for the development of the postal service which helped to commercialize the trade.

The growth of distance learning has only been enhanced by the advent of the Internet. Correspondence that could have taken days, even weeks to transmit from the professor to the student and back, can now take mere moments. This attraction, amongst others, has led to more people subscribing for distance learning courses all over the world.

Distance regardless, many schools will ask you to report in school for your final exams. It would not matter to them that you are on a distance learning program… or in fact, it would. They are merely trying to limit cheating on the course. You might be a person of integrity, but they have no way of knowing that. Besides, there are others who are not so veracious, and they have no way of knowing.

Accreditation is incredibly important as far as distance learning programs and institutions are concerned. The New England associate of schools and colleges is an accreditation board for both on and off campus education. The north central association of schools and colleges and the middle states association of schools and colleges are equally accreditation bodies in their respective states. Make sure that a distance learning program is accredited before you commit to it.

Distance learning is not without its own challenges. As a full time mother, you will have to juggle the household chores with your distance learning program and that can be quite a feat. If you are an especially busy person, you will need to learn how to manage your time in order to succeed at distance learning.
