One topic of conversation seems to have dominated conversations recently: sunshine, or rather, lack of it. Following what seems like weeks of relentless rain, many of us are turning our thoughts to sunnier climes; the thought of getting away for a break somewhere, anywhere, as long as it’s sunny has never seemed so appealing. Short haul flights mean that the prospect of a long weekend in the sun is ever more appealing, and accessible.
However, if the urge to leave the country has sent you scurrying for the best last minute deals, it’s worth remembering a few tips before you head for the sun. A strange contradiction seems to occur with the last minute getaway mind set. Whereas a holiday that has been booked months ahead will often be planned like a military operation, leaving no detail over looked, it’s all too easy, when you leave in haste to forget the obvious. When the English weather turns on us like this, we think that we can just up and leave – but this could have serious implications.
The most glaring oversight is to forget to check that your passport is still valid, and that it will cover you for the length of your stay away. If your passport’s been shoved in a drawer throughout winter months, check that it’s in date, before you dent the plastic on an impulse to head to the sun next week. In days of heightened international security, trying to purchase an emergency passport will probably cost more, in terms of both time and expense, than the holiday itself.
Assuming that your passport is valid, don’t leave home without taking adequate security measures to protect your home and possessions whilst you are away. It’s all too easy to smugly pack ‘hand luggage only’ and dash to the airport and forget to pack away valuable items. Leaving a laptop, or stereo in obvious view could be open invitation to any shady characters who realise that you’re not home. Aside from the obvious stress caused (that will undo all the benefits of warming your bones in the sun) your home and precious possessions within could be at risk if you are abroad and failed to take adequate steps to store valuables safely, out of sight of any potential wrong doers.
The same goes when you arrive at your destination. Fewer people take out holiday insurance for a long weekend break, incorrectly assuming their home insurance and contents insurance will provide cover for any items likely to be taken away from home. Therefore your expensive camera or iPod won’t be covered, and if you only get two days away, spending one of them dealing with the idiosyncrasies of the local police station to file a report defeats the whole point of going in the first place.
A final word of advice; it might only be a short break, but coming back to the office with a dubious lobster like glow won’t impress anyone. Don’t forget the sun block – even for a few days on a beach. Aside from making anyone who has endured yet another rainy weekend here jealous, you’ll feel sore and look silly.
