Not going to university was one of the biggest and best decisions I ever made

By: Sarah Maple-11606

The first big decision I made when I left college was that I wasn’t going to go to university. I was sick of being in education and the thought of attending another class or lecture filled me with a wet cloud of depression.

I did not feel the need to escape from my parents or to have the ‘uni experience’ that in my opinion is completely overrated. I had moved from Leeds to Cornwall at the age of seventeen and felt like I had already been there and done that when it came to moving to another town, making new friends and enjoying new found freedom. I didn’t want to have to do it all over again with a group of people who were doing it all for the first time.

The problem was that I knew I would have to obtain a degree if I were to pursue a career in my chosen field. A degree stands you in good stead with employers as it has shown that you are dedicated and disciplined enough to complete voluntary education. I knew that I was disciplined and dedicated enough to obtain a degree I just wasn’t sure about the university lifestyle. Running around and getting drunk just wasn’t for me. I like my nice tidy house and the money that I receive from my part time job at home. I had only lived in the country for a short time and I didn’t want to go back to a town or city quite yet.

For a while I weighed up my options. I thought that if I took a year or two out to work and travel I would feel more optimistic about going back into education, the knowledge that university fees were rising every year however, played on my mind. This all changed after visiting a friend who happened to be taking an online degree course. I watched one of his online lectures and was fascinated by the interactive online classroom environment. There was no need to live on campus and physically go to lectures; you could watch them from your living room over a cup of tea! My friend explained how by doing these online university courses you could gain foundation and postgraduate qualifications without having to conform to the traditional view of what going to university is about.

I am now planning to apply to an online university that will help me earn the degree I need to take my career down the path I want it to go. A quality resource is Kaplan Distance Learning.

I found online universities such as Kaplan offer a very high standard of higher education. There are different types of online universities; some are aimed at college leavers who want to work at home, others are aimed at those already in the world of work who believe a degree will benefit their business or personal progress in the world of work. Taking an online degree became my second big decision and one that I have been ever glad I made.
