By: Abbey Grace Yap

Everybody has been fuzzing about the hottest thing to hit the IT industry – search engine optimization. What is it? Why is everyone dying to get their dibs on this new sensation?

What is search engine optimization?
More commonly referred to as SEO, search engine optimization is the process of increasing the volume and the quality of traffic that goes into a website from search engines like Google and Yahoo through natural search results for specific keywords.

Although the term SEO could also be used for search engine optimizers. These are people who take do the optimization on behalf of the clients, both consultants and employees who carry on the work alike.

What is SEO used for?
As what has been mentioned above. SEO is primarily used to increase traffic to a specific website. However, this is implemented as a part of a bigger marketing strategy.

For example, you own a website that sells products depends on the amount of people visiting the website for potential sales. If the site is not optimized, people searching for products along the lines of what your site is selling will not be able to come across your site and see your products.

On the other hand, this is what happens when your website has been optimized. A customer enters a product that he wants to search for online, the search engine will be able to recognize that your category matches the search criteria entered by the customer. The search engine will bring up your website as a search result. The customer can visit your site and browse through your products.

Having an optimized website increases the likelihood of people opening the site and browsing its contents for useful information or purchasing the products you market on the site.

What methods do SEOs use to optimize a website?
Methods being used for SEO purposes have been categorized into white and black hat.

White hat SEO techniques are those that are considered acceptable by search engine standards. These techniques generate traffic naturally. White hat SEO techniques generally produce results that last a long time, staying as a popular search result over an extended period of time. Although it isn't necessarily applicable for all techniques, some white hat SEO strategies take some time to implement.

Here are some of the most commonly used white hat SEO technique:
l Providing quality content
l Researching popular keywords
l Integrating effective keyword usage into the content.
l Using quality inbound links

Black hat SEO techniques, on the other hand, are SEO processes that search engines do not approve of. Black hat techniques produce short term results in improving site traffic, all the while anticipating the possibility of having the website banned temporarily or permanently upon the discovery of the illicit technique used. Black hat techniques used to be white hat techniques that have been overdone and have become frowned upon by the general SEO community.

Here are some of the many different black hat techniques being used:
l Hiding content
